Verizon Wireless Data Usage Question
If I get this phone from Verizon Wireless, I want to be able to access the internet. However, I have been reading that you have to get on of their pda/smartphone plans which is ridiculously priced, in my opinion. Since the phone comes with WIFI, can you keep the evo data transfer turned off, so you can get the pay as you go kb pda plan and use only the WIFI?

yes, just dont install the wireless sync program

I think there's more to it than that. You would also need to disable the default dial-up networking connection to make sure it doesn't dial up the Internet when you're surfing.

How does one surf when theyve disabled the internet? The only way the user will incur a bunch of charges due to data is if HE or SHE installs wireless sync or syncs their email. Other than that the device comes packaged as pay as u go being ok, pay for whatever data send or receive.

well honestly the Data package has to do with the email client that is on the PDA. Which there is a pay as u go feature of .00001 per KB. Which is setup on the PDA when it is activated unless you stress otherwise to the person that sets the line up. (upgrade, new) whichever. Surfing the web is web 2.0 based which you would get charged by minute.. depending on what time of the day and which day u are using the service. Free minutes after nine.. and on the weekends.

I just bought one,I had Verizon put a Data
blocker on my account,After you activate the Phone.I can still use the WiFi
to hit the Internet. Some day,If I can get my
Work to pay for the Data half,I'll have Verizon
turn it back on.

The easiest way to circumvent this is to go under connections and change how applications connect to the internet, and just select my isp, and then never setup a connection for your isp. The phone is using data whenever it dial #777, so also watch for that. Data is used whenever IE is used (except when Wifi is on, then IE will use your Wifi connection), wireless sync, MMS Messages (yes, I know, it sucks.), e-mail, etc. Text messages don't use data. Just for your info too, Verizon charges .15 per kb, so, it get real expensive if you accidentally use data.

Get this device with Sprint instead. EVDO coverage is better and you get unlimited data transfer instead of paying through the nose. Verizon rips you off with data use and to get a device that is designed for data on their network seems crazy to me. GET SPRINT.
