Wi-Fi instead of wireless

Freeloadr

Can someone please confirm if the 6700 will indeed use a wi-fi connection instead of the providers wireless if wi-fi is available (and configured of course)?

I saw this mentioned on one site, http://andrew.triumf.ca/starcom/, and I've been looking for confirmation.

Thanks.

Yes, you can use wi-fi instead of the provider's data plan.

But does the phone switch automatically, or do I need to change a setting to tell it to use wifi instead?

I have the Verizon version, and I have to manually set it to wifi. Otherwise, it uses the EVDO. I'm not sure if there's a registry flag you can edit to always use wifi when using the internet.

If you use the registry hack to enable phone and WIFI at the same time and set your WIFI settings to always on it will pick the WIFI over EVDO when connecting to the internet(at least mine does). But I only do this while at home because having both on at the same time will REALLY DRAIN your battery so it is not advisable to do this all the time. Plus I live in a rural area right on the fringe of EVDO service so it is a huge advantage to connect WIFI.

OK, but this brings be back to my question of how? Does just turning wi-fi on override wireless or are there more steps?

When you turn on the WIFI (I am guessing you already have the hack that allows you to use phone and WIFI at the same time). If there is a signal your phone will try to connect, if it is an open network you should automatically connect and if you connect that will override you EVDO connection. If it is a secure network it will require you to set up your phone (SSID number, WEP key, and MAC address) with the networks settings. It is pretty easy to do if you have all the network/router settings.

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks!
