UTStarcom PPC-6700 / XV-6700 / HTC Apache
No sound - third time
Verizon VZW 6700 - do use a wired headset... now when headset is not connected - there is NO sound output at all. We've had the phone replaced twice before for this issue... it seems there must be a problem with the headset lockout in the jack. Though Verizon swears there is no issue. Phone works like a champ otherwise... but getting tired of replacing it. Anyone else seeing this as a known issue? Any fixes - short of replacement? Yes, we do like and want to be able to use a wired headset.

I have the same problem. They swore it had water damage. I don't know of any water damage. It actually started after i began using my wired headset because my bluetooth headset was dead. Now a week using this with only headsets. It's rediculous. I thought i found the perfect phone. I activated this one 12/12/2007. 4 months... Time to go back to the kiss theroy with phones. I had the Samsung PDA and went through 5 in 2 years. Never water damage, never dropped. I can't believe these expensive things break so often on their own.

wow. I had no idea this was such a problem. i've been using the phone both wired and wireless for the since it was released. no problems with sound. I actually alternate between wired and wireless when I'm driving depending on how much battery is left. This just started happening to me and is driving me crazy. I really thought it was a software issue but you guys are seeing it as hardware?

I don't know the source of the problem but Verizon quickly took it back and sendt me a refurbished replacement.

Just this morning, the external sound works. dont know how long it will last but I'm annoyed at always having to tote my earpieces with my phone around the house.

These problems are caused by the jack switch as many of you may have heard. Even if you do not have a plug in there for use the switch can stick. It's very sensitive.
If you put some elecetrical cleaner on the jack itself and stick it in and out a few times and let it sit. The take your earphone jack and spray a small amount of wd-40 on and repeat by sticking it in the hole and removing several times.
You will find that you touch tones and speaker and voice work fine. Be warned, DON NOT SPRAY ANY OF THESE ITEMS IN THE PHONE JACK HOLE! ONLY ON A HEADPHONE JACK!
Many repair shops re getting anywhere from $50.00 to $175.00 to replace your jack and they are not doing it. They are doing what I told you. I have even had inside info...

This fix makes total sense. But as he said, spray only the plug, makes sure it's not dripping and then insert the plug into the jack. If it's dripping you can cause a problem you don't want. I myself would not use WD40 but I would obtain the following
Radio Shack Control/Contact Cleaner & Lubricant.
Part #64-4315, it's around $8 or $9 bucks and is worth having around the house for all types of contact and control button issues, BEWARE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING. DONT DO IT!
If it doesn't work the first time, keep dipping the plug into the solution, (spray some into an old glass or cup you will never use again, this stuff is poisonous) and keep trying. If by say the sixth try, I would say the issue is more than dirty con...
