Multiple networks
So up until June 30, Sprint had it's 3G for normal voice and so-so data, plus iDEN handling normal voice and the fastest, most reliable PTT on the planet. Today, Sprint has 3G for normal voice, still so-so data, so-so PTT, and it's new LTE network for fast data. Three networks total, counting WiMax.
The irony is how, just a few months, ago people were constantly proclaiming that it was just not economical to field two networks of fundamentally different technologies, and for that reason alone Nextel should be shut down as quickly as possible. Yet now that Sprint again has two networks (CDMA + LTE, or three if you want to include WiMax), no one is saying it's a bad idea to have multiple network technologies. Similarly, not a soul complains...

you have your facts messed up. Sprints network is CDMA, it use to be CDMA and IDEN. Wimax and LTE are not networks, they are PCI cards in a computer and parts on a CDMA tower, you can hotswap the cards to change technology as part of their new network vision project. They have one network currently, CDMA. Think of LTE like a scope on the gun...you add it, the gun remains the same, just has an add on now...same LTE is an add on to the CDMA tower sprint uses.

No, you are confused between the term "Network Vision" and "network". CDMA is Sprint's standalone CDMA network that carries voice & data. LTE is Sprint's new high-bandwidth network that initially will carry only data, eventually will be c...

Ironically, the areas where Sprint customers are reporting vast improvement are newly activated 800 ESMR locations. LOL! Nextel is still outshining the competition and its own parent company post-mortem.

what I was saying though as someone who has trained on Network Vision, LTE in a sprint base station is a PCI card, sprint can hotspot up to 5 technologies just like that in the new setup. LTE doesnt have it's own towers, they are piggy back equipment on sprints existing towers where as nextel had dedicated tower. Sprint is actually tearing down the nextel towers and simply re allocating the spectrum and frequency on the new sprint towers

Although I hated to lose Nextel/iDEN, I'm glad to hear that some folks are reaping positive benefits from iDEN's spectrum.
I'm hoping that our home neighborhood eventually receives that kind of upgrade. Although the 3G CDMA data speeds have improved a bit here (from 0.050 Mb/s to around 0.150 Mb/s), Sprint Direct Connect still does not work well for us...still refuses to connect about 50% of the time, and we get a one-try, 0.5 second connection only about one time in ten attempts.
