Charging habits
I have heard a few things about how to charge the phone and am wondering which are myths and which are truths.
1. If you charge the battery for too long or overnight, it will over-charge and stop holding a good charge. Is this true or false?
2. If you leave the phone on, talk on it, or use it in other ways while it is charging, the battery will not hold a good charge. Any ideas if that is true or false?

Well to answer your questions, both are absolutely completley true. You're never supposed to leave your phone on during charging unless you want to battery to be shot in like a month. Never talk on the phone while charging it becuase not only does it take longer for it to charge up fully but your also killing off battery cells when talking on it. Charge it 3-4 hours or until it says fully charged and the light turns from red to green I believe that it only takes 2 hours or so for our phoens to fully charge though. You dont have to keep a hawks eye on it, but do check in w/ it every so often.

Do the samsung chargers have an automatic power stop when the phone is at a full charge or do you have to unplug the phone from the charger? I dont want to overcharge the battery. I am a forgetfull person and would like to keep my phone in good condition for as long as possible.

The phone does not have an automoacit off button for the charger meaning you do have to unplug the phone once fully charged. I understand you compoletely because I to want to prolonge the life of my battery as well. Yu just have to check in wthi it every so often.

I disagree - I usually leave my phone charging overnight, for 7-8 hrs, and just unplug it in the morning. So probably I am over-charging it 3-4 hrs a day, and I still usually get 3 days of life out of the phone before it needs recharging. Verizon reps always tell you not to over-charge the battery, but I have had 3 phones (Motorola v60i, Samsung SCH-A530 and this one) and I have always done the same thing, and the battery is still fine. Maybe a slight decrease in battery life but I've been doing it with my A670 for 6 months and the battery still works fine.

Ok well im just telling you what i know since i work at the Verizon store near my house. This is what every sales rep has told me over and over again. If you do continue to overcharge your battery though, I am telling you that the cells in the battery will burn out which will make your batery life go down. I try not to overcharge mine for a very long period of time.

Perhaps your battery life has not decreased, but i have also heard that overcharging can cause the phone to heat up more. This is just what i have heard. Does your phone get warm after talking on it for a while?

The car chargers that are being sold at the Verizon store are, according to Samsung, third party chargers and will ruin the battery life on the A670 phone if used even one time. Samsung, therefore, says that they will not honor the one year policy for replacement of the phone battery because I used a "third party" car charger. The customer service agents at the Verizon store said that they never heard of such a thing and that they only sell one kind of car charger. I even went so far as to have the customer service rep at Verizon call Samsung to verify what was being told to me. The Verizon rep told the Samsung rep that they have been selling these same car chargers for years. Verizon said that Samsung was just trying to get out of honor...

I've personally never heard of anything like this but then again I dont' own the car charger so i can't say from experience.

I just got a pair of A670s online through Intelenet Wireless. It included a car charger model SAM-V205/S300. Does anybody know anything about this charger? Do I need to worry about using it? I haven't used it yet.

My wife just used the SAM18PVPC Verizon "cigarette lighter" phone charger for the first time. The battery on her phone died the next day, and two days later, our alternator and our car battery died. Coincidence?? I doubt it.. I believe that our charger shorted and did all the damage. Any one got contact info these things?

According to Verizon, the phone should be charged for no more than 4 hours at a time and definitely not overnight.

Well we all know what Verizon says, but the point is, a lot of people do not really follow that advice, and nothing especially bad happens. I charge my phone overnight whenever it gets low, so usually every 2-3 days, for 7-8 hrs at a time. I've had my phone for 6 months and haven't noticed any negative effect on battery life.

Then all i have to say to you is don't go into Verizon and complain that your phone can't hold a charge anymore becaue you've been overcharging it. You're going to wind up buying another $40 battery or even the extended battery. I realize that the overcharging doesn't really seem to be effecting your phone now but in the near future a few months from now maybe im sure that you are going to start noticing a decrease in battery life. Besides, doens't your phone get hot when you overcharge it for that long of a time period?

My last phone was ancient, and I charged the Li-ion battery every night, all night.
That battery lasted 7 years.

Because the charger is not programmed to automatically stop charging when the phone reaches a full charge. It just doesn't happen so its up to you to take it off of the charger.

I maintain that nothing bad happens if you overcharge - maybe this used to be the case with older phones, and that's why Verizon employees are instructed to say this, but I really don't think it is a big deal now. Battery technology has come a long way in the past few years. It used to be that batteries had a "memory" and you had to deplete the charge almost all the way, then charge it up all the way, or else the battery's capacity would go down. Maybe it's a similar thing. I have never heard any good explanation of why charging overnight is bad.

When you overcharge your battery, your giving the battery cells more of a charge than they really need and thus "Killing" them off. Thus in a few months or even years you will notice that your battery power will start to decrease and you'll wonder why you aren't getting as many days or hours of talk time/standby time out of your battery any more. Just my 2 Cents though. I work at Verizon Wireless as a Temp so i know my stuff; at least i'd like to think so!! 🙂 😁 😎 😉

Nobody! Cell phones these days aren't even made to last two years, it seems... Chances are something else will give out long before the battery does. My a530 only lasted about 18 months before call quality got really bad with tons of lost calls... Not sure what happened, but eventually they gave me a new a670 for free.
Now the StarTAC, that thing was built to last. I have one friend who still uses it! 5 yrs old and still ticking...

But why would too much charge "kill" a battery cell? There is no good reason. It's not like they explode or something... I leave my shaver plugged in all the time when I'm not using it, and the battery works fine....

I also work for Verizon for about 2 years now... I somewhat agree with what car is saying. Samsung and others recommend that you turn your phone off while charging for a reason. After it gets a full charge the phone not the charger shuts the charging cycle off and powers down all of the phone except when the flip is open. Overcharging on this phone happens when you leave the phone on. After it is done charging the phone will use some of the power that has been charged into the phone, and then the phone will call for another charge. Changing from charge complete to charging on the main display. Li-ion does not require a battery to be discharged before a new charge can be given, it simply makes absolutely certain there is enough juice by charg...

I've had this phone since it first came out a couple of years ago. Verizon never said anything to me about charging the phone - in fact I was so dumb I didn't know you had to do that duh! New cell phone user. I asked my friends why my phone died after 3 days & followed their advice....plug it in every night while sleeping (I didn't know there was a controversy about turning it off until I stumbled on this forum today). I unplug it in the morning..has still worked great just like the first day I got it. OH I didn't know it had batteries either!
