AT&T SIM CARD BLOWS UP IN CINGULAR TREO 650?
azmanJan 27, 2005, 1:02 PM
Has anyone heard that AT&T will not be selling the Treo 650. An AT&T Rep. said it is only available from Cingular and that if you try to put your SIM card in it will blow up the Treo? I think the rep is full of crap and that they want me to get of my rate plan because I have a plan I signed up 2 years ago when GSM was fairly new in my area for 1000 mins + nights and weekends free for $39.00. Can anyone verify that once they Treo 650 comes out from Cingular?

um. it will NOT blow up the sim card... it just won't make the connection.
AT&T started taking orders on these today on the business-sales side of things. check out the treocentral.com discussion forums. don't get too caught up. it's a little obsessive. whew.
some people have already received the AT&T version of the phone today: cingular sims won't work in them it's been found. suck. come on cingular... get your act together, man! *hop*hop* so impatient!

people who have purchased the T650 from AT&T business this week have not been able to connect the AT&T T650 when placing a cingular sim card into the device. (check treocentral forums for more info.) as of right now, it is locked to AT&T. the good news is that the cingular devices should be orderable next week sometime. probably friday or so.

My understanding was that only 'Blue Box' phones would be sold for AT&T- no 'Orange Box' and that, since the Treo 650 is new product that it would not work with AT&T. I thought only 'old' stock was being released for AT&T- or is that only for new activations- upgrades are possible?

you know, it's strange. the people who received them from AT&T posted photos. shipping box was cingular, phone casing not branded, phones locked to AT&T's networks (could only use an AT&T SIM card in them). i think they're just doing the best they can trying to integrate these two really big networks/companies. old AT&T accounts can still get new phones and AT&T service, but AFAICT any new accounts go directly to cingular. i think the T650 was supposed to be an AT&T phone originally until they got bought out? might explain why they got released in AT&T's business segment first.
