Beware of the screen

Dec 26, 2013 by mbrenner

After a year with the Droid Razr Maxx I was just about to upgrade to this phone. Spent some time with it today at the Verizon store, along with its lesser battery life twin Droid.

Since these phones are on most all the time, with some logos, I noticed that the screens have a burn in issue like CRTs and Plasmas of days past. When you look at a photo or anything with a light colored background it is really apparent that there is some image burn. I tested the Droid Ultra and the Maxx both had this issue. I looked at some other phones including the Samsung, and HTC and none suffered this.

I am really sorry to see this, it was a deal breaker for me.

What is nice about the phone:
Navigation icons don't use screen real-estate. Screen is much larger than the old Razr Maxx while the phone is about the same size.

Phone is very responsive,

Dual band LTE.

Excellent battery life.

Very stock android experience (certainly for a Verizon branded phone.

What is not nice about the phone:
Screen image burn (Very important)

Screen is not very readable in bright sunlight

Screen is not a nice or high resolution as the latest Samsung and some others.

Lack of removable memory card.

Not highest end processor (not important for most uses).

Conclusions:
I still would have been very happy with the phone as a upgrade from my current phone if it were not for the screen image burn in issue.

Omfg, battery life!!!

Apr 21, 2015 by tiesan01

This phone is probably my favorite smartphone to have ever used or owned. Here is a list of pros and con's, with a brief rundown of features:

Pros: big, beautiful screen. Very responsive touch screen with intuitive "long press" options. Holding down on any part of the screen is basically like right clicking on a PC. I appreciate that.

Amazing, amazing battery life. This this holds a charge for three days even with talking and heavy web browsing. I am using WiFi a lot though, which may save on some juice since I'm not using LTE.

Very fast processor, phone rarely glitches or hangs. It will often hang at the unlock screen, however. Seems to be happening more frequently.

Nice selection of ringtones and alert sounds. Obviously with apps like Zedge, this shouldn't really matter anyways, but its nice to have them included.

Con's: signal!! The reception on this phone is like totally "meh". I seem to drop calls like my mother drops hints. Neither is great.

WiFi antenna isn't properly soldered inside the phone. Phone will often be unable to get WiFi until you smack it on your leg a few times to jiggle the antenna back into place.

Phone will crash if I try to send more than 10 SMS at once. If my Nokia can do it, my moto should to.

Too big to hold in one Hand, and too big for my pockets. I know I bought the " maxx ", but the phablet trend is wearing out on me.

That horrid " drooooiiiddd" sound it makes on startup. I hate. That. Noise. It is silly and embarrassing and everyone looks around to see where it comes from. I have installed "silent boot" to keep this from happening.

No direct file transfer via Bluetooth or USB! I can't use my phone as a mass storage device like I did with my older android. I have to use a proprietary Verizon software, which I have never once gotten to work. Cloud computing is nice and all, but sometimes a girl just wants to tether.

Overall, great phone with some annoying aspects.

Just get it! Dont let the CPU specs concern you!

I've been a diehard Motorola fan for years...owned every flagship/new Motorola phone since the original droid and this one is by far the best.

Here's the thing, I know and realize this phone is not a "spec beast"...it doesn't have the latest snapdragon 800 or 3gb's of ram...but here's the thing, unless you're a serious gamer on a 5" screen (which to me seems stupid), you will never notice the difference. What you will notice However is a next to vanilla android experience, absolutely crazy battery life and just a solid piece of tech with wireless charging to boot.

I've recently owned the Samsung Galaxy s4/note2 & note 3 and this maxx is just a better phone.

If your worried about frame rates in games, go ahead, get something else...but if that is not a concern and you just want a dead reliable phone with the best battery life of any phone out there and all the stuff that companies like Samsung charge extra for (wireless charging etc) then get this phone.

And I didn't even mention the build quality...pick up the Samsung s4 and the lg g2... Then pick this phone up...if you dont recognize the difference in build quality then you dont have a pulse.

a phone that lasts!!!!

I went from droid RAZR with crappy batter life but good looks then to RAZR maxx still with good looks but much better battery life. Then the tantalizing s4 came out and I had to try it. Great phone top specs but gimmicky, and sub par batter life made me return it for the new droid maxx. The one thing I miss on the s4 is the TV remote called watch on exclusive to Samsung phones. The new maxx is very attractive great feel high quality. Ok Google now is outstanding and very functional. I love that I can call my phone for when I always misplace my phone in my room. Wireless charging is super convenient and still works while in a thick otter box case. Active notification is brilliant.. Simple and convenient. I'm aswyper and swype is already activated right on the factory keyboard. The flip camera action is also very intuitive and handy and fast. for a phone the picture quality is plenty good. I had compared and played with HTC one ,s4 and the maxx and the OK Google now and the unbeatable battery life one me over. I do not want to carry an extra battery around or have a super far battery bulge so sorry s4. if only the maxx had ir blaster for tv remote. But I'll live. The maxx is the best phone period. No it's not quad core but I promise it's smooth as butter and not choppy like the quad core phones. The x8 computing does make a huge difference in the smooth no glitch operation. And when your phone is dead and your plugging yours in to charge im still juiced up with plenty of power.

My review of the Droid Maxx (2013) phone for Verizon Wireless.

Sep 23, 2013 by Cellular Phone   updated Sep 25, 2013

I recently upgraded to the Droid Maxx about two weeks ago. I previously owned the Droid Razr Maxx HD, which I loved despite its flaws.

Here is my take on the new Droid Maxx:

I LOVE GOOGLE NOW VOICE COMMANDS!

You can command the Droid Maxx without touching it, even when it’s asleep and just out of reach. Use voice commands to get GPS directions or open a Mobile Hotspot. The ultra-low-power notification system displays alerts so you can avoid constantly waking your phone. The iPhone cannot even do this!

Display: Huge. Screen is bright, very rich in color, and the pixel density is decent enough compared to its competition.
The display is very responsive and easy to use.

Battery: I squeeze out two full days of use with some juice to spare, if I use my phone moderately, dim the brightness, and turn off background data, bluetooth, wifi, etc. Best battery life of any smartphone, hands down. The 3500 mAh battery will get any power-user through one whole day.

Hardware: Sleek, slim, beatiful, and it feels solid. I keep my phone in an Otterbox case, but for those of you who don't need the protection, this phone is well-built to last. I love the Kevlar backing that this model has, very smooth to the touch, but not slippery like the Ultra.

JellyBean: For the most part, JellyBean runs smoothly on this device. I have very few moments where things slow for a second (mostly due to data), but this phone runs very well. Everything is synced well, hardware and software wise, so it really is a solid performer.

Reception/Call Quality: The phone holds on to a signal better than my DRMHD, and the call quality is excellent. Very clear reception.

Camera: Ok this is where I have complaints. the front facing camera sucks. It darkens everything and gives everything a yellowed color. The rear camera is better, but not as good as the competition's.

Overall, I love this phone and I recommend it!
