Palm Treo 650 (GSM)
Is this phone worth the bother?
I am considering buying this phone when it comes out for T-Mobile. Is the reception any good and how is the sound quality for phone calls?
If the Treo 650 doesn't cut it as a very good or excellent phone, I would rather invest in a phone that is of higher quality and get a separate PDA for my email/messaging needs.

I purchased a locked Treo 650 GSM a week ago and switched from Verizon to Cingular to do so. The reception in my area (Boston) with Cingular is good with some spots being impossible. Verizon's reception was a bit better. The Treo it'self has good outgoing and incoming voice quality although I wish the incoming volume was louder at it's max. My hearing isn't what it used to be. Having had a number of cell phones, I'd say the voice quality is on a par with the rest. Still, I recommend the Treo 650 and I would make this purchase again if I had to. You'll find a few of these around. Ask a friend if you can make a call or 2 on his/hers, compare it to your currant phone, and see what you think. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the info. If anyone else has advice, I would like to know how the Treo 650 compares to Blackberry phones and/or any newer Windows OS smartphones, specifically offered by T-Mobile.

I have used the BlackBerry phones for 3 years and have used the Motorola MPX 200 and Motorola MPX 220. The MPX 200 didn't have very good reception or call quality, as well as sync issues. I liked the idea of the push email with BlackBerry, but the quality has seemed to go down in the last year. BlackBerry has suffered some significant outages recently with RIM to have no comment as to the reason for it. I've used BlackBerry with Nextel, T-Mobile, AT&T Wireless,and Cingular. I had the best reception with Cingular. I have used the Windows smartphones MPX 200 and MPX 220 with AT&T Wireless and Cingular respectively. Sounds like you're pretty knowledgeable. I'm getting ready to purchase the 650 myself. Have you tried connecting your laptop through the phone to use it as a modem on the go? I need internet access with my laptop, though it doesn't have to be particularly fast. I'm told the speed through the Treo is about 2x56k. Trying to find that printed somewhere. My vsp is Verizon. The phone itself will be the same but since you're using T-Mobile the service will be different.
As far as features go the 650 is a sweet little thing and now that HP is coming out with cell phones and DELL is as well expect the phone/pda hybrid market to get very competitive.
Especially if Blackberry goes bye bye.
